PUBLIC INFORMATION ANNOUNCEMENT
September 21, 2009
On Friday, September 18, 2009, a sixteen (16) month old female, Destiny Patterson, from Clay County died at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital. We are investigating this as a suspicious death and believe the original incident/injury happened at the child’s home in the Oakleaf area of Clay County the day before her death.
The person of interest in this case is Mr. Torey Jenkins (DOB 2/3/76). He was babysitting the child on 9/17/09 and was alone with the child for several hours before contacting the child’s mother about her having supposed breathing difficulties. The mother arrived at the residence where she and Jenkins drove the child to a nearby fire station. The child was taken to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital where she expired on 9/18/09. We are waiting on the results of the Medical Examiner’s report regarding the exact cause of death.
We confirm that the U.S. Marshals arrested Jenkins yesterday/Sunday in Tennessee on unrelated charges (a warrant for driving with a suspended license). While our agency does consider Jenkins a person of interest in regards to the death of Destiny Patterson, we do not have a warrant for his arrest on this case at this time - he is not under arrest related to this case. However, detectives from the CCSO did go to Tennessee to interview Jenkins and the investigation into his involvement is ongoing at this time.
If you received a media release from the U.S. Marshals via an affiliate media outlet in Tennessee, please disregard any portion of that information that states that Jenkins has been arrested for murdering the child. To report such would be inaccurate at this time. We will keep you posted however on any new developments in this case.
