Organized Fencing Operation Busted in Clay County
Detectives from the CCSO General Investigations Unit worked in conjunction with FDLE agents and Target retail investigators to bust an organized fencing operation. One leader of this illegal operation, 33-year-old Nyota Z. McGriff, was arrested on four counts of Initiating Theft of Property ("fencing") plus one drug sale charge. An accomplice, 28-year-old Ms. Dishawn D. Butler, is wanted on a warrant for similar charges and remains at large. Butler was featured recently as "Clay's Most Wanted" in local newspapers and detectives are actively searching for her.
Detectives believe the two women provided "shopping lists" to professional shoplifters who would in turn steal the listed items from local retail stores. The shoplifters were paid pennies on the dollar for the stolen items by McGriff and Butler who would then sell the stolen items to predetermined buyers for a profit. Detectives believe these types of fencing rings go on year-round targeting major store chains all over our region.
Please see the attached booking sheet for some additional details on McGriff's arrest. If anyone has information about Dishawn Butler's location, please call 904-264-6512 for the Clay County Sheriff's Office. Media members with questions about the case(s) may call CCSO Det. Adam Graff at 904-213-6662.
