CCSO to Roll Out New BEARCAT Equipment
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office will “roll out” a new piece of much-needed equipment on Monday, January 14th at the agency’s Green Cove Springs office at 11am. The Lenco BEAR CAT LE (law enforcement model) was bought with federal funds through the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). This program was established to ensure that regional governments had the equipment needed to respond to and deal with local security threats. The total cost of the vehicle was $320,831. We received $286,033 from a 2010 Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) federal grant and CCSO used $34,798 in federal forfeiture funds for the purchase. No local tax funds were used for the purchase.
This armored vehicle will allow our agency members to safely deliver SWAT deputies into high risk situations. It also allows for the safe evacuation of both law enforcement and citizens from potential life-threating scenes and situations. Sheriff Rick Beseler and CCSO SWAT members will be available Monday in the front parking lot to show media members this new equipment and to discuss why this is needed in Clay County. BEAR CAT stands for Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck.
