The Environmental Crimes Unit is a branch of Clay County Government and the Clay County Sheriff's Office. Two sworn law enforcement officers are funded by the county to investigate crimes involving violations of environmental laws. They investigate all types of environmental crimes cases and violations of the Florida Administrative Code. These cases include illegal dumping of solid waste, wetland violations, improper disposal of hazardous waste, improper discharge of industrial waste and general litter law violations.

In addition, these investigators also attempt to educate the public and local business owners about these laws and ways to properly dispose of materials and waste. They work directly with various local county agencies, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Water Management District among others.
